NATIONAL PENSION SYSTEM (Nenkin Seido)
This system is designed to guarantee a stable livelihood by providing a pension when you reach 60 years old and retire from work or become disabled through sickness or injury.
Employees’ Pension
|
It is a pension system for employees who are working in private companies. The pension premium is deducted from the monthly salary as well as the premiums for the national pension premium. Employees' pension allows the contributors to receive pension payments in the future and the use of various welfare facilities.
Non- Japanese nationals who have made contributions for a certain period of time are eligible for the lump-sum withdrawal when leaving Japan permanently. |
National Pension
|
It is a pension system for the self-employed person etc. All people aged between 20 and 60 living in Japan must join the National Pension System. If you join the National pension, several billing statements will be sent to you once a year. Pay the premiums with the statements at a bank every month.
If you can’t pay the pension premium for financial reasons, you can apply for exemption of payment. After you apply for the exemption system, all or part of the pension premium will be excused according to the amount of income earned the previous year. In case of students or people under 30, they can apply for the extension of payment. If it's approved, you can delay the payment of the pension premium. To receive a pension, people have to pay the pension premium for more than 25 years including the period of exemption or extension. If you don’t pay the pension premium without applying for the exemption of payment, you won’t receive any pension back in the future. |
Lump-Sum Withdrawal Refund
|
Foreign residents living in Japan must join the Pension System, however, those who are here for a short period and satisfy the following conditions can receive the Withdrawal Lump-Sum. To receive it, apply within two years from the date you left Japan. A maximum of three years’ worth of payments will be returned to you.
① Persons who do not possess Japanese citizenship. ② Persons who paid National Pension or Employees’ Pension Insurance premiums for six months or more. ③ Persons who don’t have residency in Japan. ④ Persons who are not qualified to receive pension benefits. |
