Earthquakes in Japan
According to USGS, Japan is in a "very active seismic area, and they have the densest seismic network in the world, so they are able to record many earthquakes." The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) is responsible for providing information about the earthquakes in the country with the use of about 200 seismographs, about 600 seismic intensity meters and 3,600 seismic intensity meters. The location and intensity of an earthquake can be found in the JMA website.
The Japanese word for earthquake is "jishin (地震)." A large earthquake is expected to hit the Tokai region including the cities and towns in Tobu area. This is called “Tokai Jishin (the earthquake that will occur in Tokai region)”, and it is predicted to cause serious damages. The Shizuoka prefecture and cities in the prefecture has provided guidance to its residents on how to protect yourself and to prepare yourself in an event of an earthquake. |
The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) launched the Emergency Warning System last August 2013. Emergency Warnings are issued to alert residents of the high possibility of disasters due to earthquakes, tsunamis, heavy rains and volcanic activities.
